SLY MISSION
STATEMENT:
The mission of SLY
(St. Luke Youth) is to guide the development of Catholic values,
to help the youth develop a deeper appreciation of the meaning
of Jesus in their lives, to foster spiritual growth, to involve
the youth in reaching out to serve people in need in our community
as well as provides social and recreational activities.
GOALS:
SLY goals include:
Teaching
Building Community
Prayer & Worship
Service to the Church
Service to the Community
Guidance & Healing
The
St. Luke Youth group is divided into two sections:
1. A Junior High Youth Ministry for teens grades 6 through 8.
2. A Senior
High Youth Ministry for teens grades 9 through 12 and young adults
in collage.
3. Youth
Board Ministry which is a team of both Jr. and Sr. youth put together
by the Youth Director. This team meets once a month to train for
Church Youth Leadership and help assist the director in making
plans for the entire youth ministry.
Each group
meets at least twice a month at 7pm in the Youth Center. The First
Sunday of each month is a Youth Board Meeting. The second Sunday
of each month is a Joint meeting for all groups. The third Sunday
is for the Jr. group and the 4th Sunday is for the Senior group.
The purpose
of our Youth Ministry is to provide an opportunity for young people
to discover themselves and their church in a positive, Christian
atmosphere. Activities vary monthly, but include spiritual, service,
and social elements. Activities include: dances, field trips,
conferences, festivals, retreats, sports activities, and community
service projects as well as spiritual and moral topics of discussion
in meetings.
The group
is affiliated with the Archdiocesan CYO/Youth Ministry and participates
in activities such as World Youth Day, and the bi-annual National
Catholic Youth Conference.
Our Youth
Ministry interacts with other ministries at St. Luke’s to
encourage our young people to participate in the life of faith
community.
These activities include the annual Harvest Carnival or Trick
or Trunk for the young of all ages of the parish and community,
serving a Thanksgiving lunch to all the senior citizens of the
community and parish, providing help at the annual Parish picnic,
Craft Fair, Fais Do Do, Easter Sunrise Service and the annual
Graduation Mass. We also perform the Living Way of the Cross on
Good Friday, we plan and work the Jr. Day retreat during Lent,
the bi-annual Homeless & Hungry fund-raiser for the needy,
we work and serve at the local Soup Kitchen, we have annual scavenger
hunts in the surrounding neighborhoods and collect canned goods
for the Christmas and Thanksgiving baskets.

TOGETHER
The Youth Board Ministry
is an elected group of Senior/Junior youth members who serve the
Ministry and work with the Youth Ministers. To be an elected member
of the Youth Board you must be an active and devoted registered
SLY member for at least two years
The board is
divided as follows:
Ministry is a service
rendered out of love, and with deep respect for the person served,
after the model of Jesus Christ.
Ministry is never self-seeking;
ministry is giving and it is the kind of giving in which one loves
the persons one gives to. To bring joy, to bring relief from pain
and sorrow, to end anxiety and fear, to share what enriches this
ministry.
Ministry is not an attempt to do someone over in some preconceived
pattern. It uncritically respects the individually, taste, and
life choices of the persons served, freeing them to create themselves
anew. It urges, inspires, shares supports; it never forces.
