Baptism
Requirements |
- Parents anticipating
baptism for a child are required to make an appointment with
one of the priests or deacons of our parish prior to attending
a Baptism Seminar. Seminars are held on the second Wednesday
of each month at 7:00pm. Godparents are welcome and encouraged
to attend the seminar also.
Basic Requirements
for Parents:
- Parents must
set up appointment to meet with a priest or deacon prior to
Baptismal Seminar. Both parents required at this meeting.
- At least one
parent must be a registered St. Luke parishioner. If you’re
new to the parish, you must present letter from your former
pastor stating you were a registered member of that parish.
This letter must be presented no later than the Baptism Seminar.
- Parents not married
in Catholic Church are expected to see the priest or deacon
about validation of their marriage.
- Parents who have
not celebrated their First Communion or Confirmation will
be invited to enter the RCIA program.
- Both parents
are expected to attend the Baptism Seminar prior to Baptism.
Godparents also invited but attendance not required.
- Baptism may be
delayed or postponed for non-compliance with any of above
and for non-practice of the Catholic faith.
Requirements for
Godparents:
It is customary in the Catholic Church to have one
godmother and/or one godfather. One of the godparents must be
at least 16 years of age, have received the three sacraments
of initiation (that is Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist)
and be actively practicing their faith. A non-Catholic, baptized
Christian of another faith may act as a Christian witness along
with a Catholic godparent. (NOTE: An unconfirmed
Catholic cannot be a Christian witness.)
If godparents are not St. Luke parishioners, they will need
a letter from their pastor stating that they meet sponsor
qualifications – presented no later than the Baptism Seminar.
- Please contact
Deacon Harold Burke in the church office (641-6429) if you
have any questions and to obtain a baptismal packet that includes
baptismal requirements for parents and godparents.
