THE WORD OF GOD IN THE LIFE AND MISSION OF THE CHURCH Welcome to all, both returning students and families and to those who are new to St. Luke. We are very happy to have you with us as we journey in faith to know, love and serve God ever more deeply. Classes began the week of September 14, 15 & 16. This weekend, September 21 is Catechetical Sunday, a day set aside to recognize the important mission of our church to teach the message of Jesus Christ to all the ends of the earth. Our catechists – those who share the word of God- will be commissioned and blessed at all the Masses this weekend. Please pray for all of our volunteers and for the students they have been entrusted with that they may be open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit and form a deeper relationship with Jesus. The Religious Education Office is located in the same building as the Church. Our office hours are 10:00AM – 3:00PM Monday through Friday. However, we are often and usually in the office after 3:00 on most days should you need to contact us. Our office phone number is 985-641-2570. Religious Education classes are offered on Sunday mornings for grades kindergarten, first and second. Grades three through tenth meet on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Please read our handbook for more information concerning the Religious Education program here at St. Luke Church. You will also find a complete schedule for the 2008-09 year at this site. If your have any questions concerning our program please call me at the office. All of us at St. Luke are happy to assist you in any way we can. Thank you for entrusting your children to us as we share in your ministry to teach the children in the ways of the Lord. SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM In keeping with the directives of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, St. Luke Church presents the Safe Environment Program to all volunteers who work with children under 18 years of age. We also provide a workshop for parents and a special lesson plan is presented to all the students each year. These lessons are age appropriate and provided to us by the Archdiocese. All of our catechists received their training and underwent a background check before the start of the Religious Education year. The parent workshop was presented at the meetings held on September 8 & 9, 2008. If you missed these presentations, you can go to the archdiocesan web site to download the parent handout as well as the student lesson plans. The web site is www.orearchdio-no.com and click on Safe Environment. Handouts are also available in our Religious Ed. Office. The Safe Environment lessons will be presented to our students at their classes the week of October 12, 13, &14. Parents, you have the right to decide if you want your child to hear this lesson. If you should decide that you do not want your child to attend this class, you must come to the Rel. Ed. Office and sign a Right of Refusal form. This form can also be downloaded from the archdiocesan web site, but must be brought to our office in person. If you have any questions regarding this program, you may contact our office at 985-641-2570.
